What Is SEO?
SEO, or Search Engine Optimisation, is the process of maximising the number of hits your website gets from organic search engine results pages (SERPS) such as Google. With over five billion individual searches a day on Google alone, it is important that all businesses optimise their content to rank as highly as possible for their target keywords.
How Do You Rank Higher On Google?
First, the simple answer.
Google wants to provide it’s users with the page results that the user is looking for when they perform a search. They do this by placing all of the relevant, trusted and authoritative content at the top of the page. For example, if we perform a search for “Mcdonald’s” on Google the top two results are Mcdonald’s official website and Mcdonald’s Twitter page. This isn’t a coincidence. Google places these results at the top because they are what they believe we, the searcher, are looking for. But how does it come to this conclusion?
How Does Google Decide Their Rankings
Now the complex answer.
Google uses a number of sophisticated algorithms that are constantly evolving to decide which pages are relative to the user’s search. These algorithms decide which sites Google ‘trusts’ by sifting out pages that are spammy, poorly built, slow to load or simply broken. Once it has done this Google will then rank the remaining sites based on how relevant they are to the user’s search and how authoritative they are within their field. Broadly speaking, Google analyses two categories of a site’s DNA to complete the ranking process, onpage factors and offpage factors:
Onpage SEO is the process of optimising the structure and syntax of your web page in order to appeal to a predefined set of keywords. This consists of lots of html syntax alterations and while this topic is far too detailed to break down in this post, there are plenty of great resources out there regarding optimising your onpage SEO if you wish to read a little more.
Offpage SEO is the process of creating links between your site and other sites on the internet. This can be done by listing your site on local directories, shouting about your brand on social media and having other sites link to yours through providing excellent, engaging content. However, this is a very simplistic description of what constitutes good off page SEO, you can read about this in more detail here.
